Circulating nurses perform administrative duties throughout a procedure. They ensure that all paperwork is complete, and during the surgery may document the procedure. These specialized nurses will replenish surgical supplies during the procedure as needed, and afterwards, are responsible to verify the instrument count and complete any charts.
The registered nurse first assistant is just that: primarily he or she assists the surgeon during an operation. These responsibilities vary with the procedure and the surgeon but generally involve bleeding control, suture incisions and providing directed assistance should a complication arise. RN first assistants additionally care to patients prior to surgery by providing instructions and answering questions. Afterwards they monitor and assess patient recoveries and provide discharge instructions.
